Local bowlers to compete in tournaments in Australia, New Zealand Jose Smith and Zach Uhles of Central Point have been selected to participate as bowlers in the People to People Sports Ambassadors Program in Australia and New Zealand later this summer. The pair will participate in the Koala Open, a tour for youth teams from throughout the world Aug. 1-14. The People to People program was initiated by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 as a way for different cultures to foster peace and friendship . Smith, 19, and Uhles, 12, will not only compete in the tournament but will interact with foreign students their own age and visit historial momuments in Australia and Zealand. They will spend one week in each country. Smith, a 2000 Crater High School graduate, has been bowling since he was 12. He has a high game of 289 and an average of 185. Uhles, who will be a seventh-grader at Scenic Middle School, posted a 151 average and a high series of 541 during a recent tournament at Medford Lanes. He has been bowling since he was 8. Smith and Uhles are seeking financial sponsors to help finance their trips, which are expected to cost about $4,000 each.
