Crater takes home Pre title COOS BAY - A pack mentality helped Crater win the Prefontaine Memorial Run high school boys team race Saturday as the Comets' five scoring runners placed in spots No. 9-13. The run combined open and prep competition. Crater edged Phoenix by five points in the 13-team race. Trevor Palmer, Perry Dickson, Samuel Jacobson, J.J. Moses and Jeremy Firestone finished in the aforementioned spots, earning Crater 55 points. A more scattered showing by Phoenix, that included third- and fourth-place efforts by Nathanial May and Lalo Flores, placed the Pirates second with 60 points. Klamath Union's Lauren Jespersen and Jacob Gomez finished 1-2 in the 10-kilometer race, but the Pelicans could only manage a third-place effort in the team competition. Jespersen placed second overall in 33 minutes, 8 seconds. In other local boys results, Rogue River finished fifth, Mazama sixth and North Medford ninth. In high school girls action, Rogue River cruised to the team title with 54 points behind individual winner Lauren Fety, whose time of 40:39 was the fourth-fastest among all female participants. Allegra Fety finished fifth for the Chieftains, with Erin Gilkison eighth, Lacey Spark 18th and Ashley Marriot 22nd. Crater took third behind ninth- and 10th-place efforts by Kendal Nelson and Samantha Rezer, while Klamath Union was seventh, North Medford ninth and Mazama 10th. Chris Clancy, 19, of Portland won the individual men's title in 32:35. Erin Gray, 14, of Eugene, was the highest-placing female at 38:30. Bob Rose, 47, of Murphy, won the wheelchair division in 45:52. NEW BALANCE INVITATIONAL - At Oregon City, Ashland High's Kendall Clark placed eighth in a high-powered field of 95 runners in the cross country meet. Clark covered 5,000 meters in 19 minutes, 9 seconds, helping the Grizzlies to ninth place. They competed in the Sweepstakes Division, the higher of two 15-team groupings. Ashland placed three runners from 41st to 43rd places - Mariah Mayfield (20:34), Gretchen Buettner (20:34) and Therese McCaffrey (20:35) - and Rihana Patterson was 59th in 21:05. The Ashland boys placed 14th out 17 teams, largely because top runner Chris Faudree collapsed from heat exhaustion. Faudree was taken to a hospital as a precaution and is fine. The Grizzly boys who scored were Asha Stout, 50th, 16:41; Andy Wright, 60th, 16:52; David Richardson, 70th, 17:06; Jeff Olson, 75th, 17:14; and Kyle Novak, 90th, 17:34. Football BENSON 38, EAGLE POINT 21 - At Portland, Benson roared to a big lead and held off Eagle Point in the non-conference game Saturday. Eagle Point (1-1) scored the final two touchdowns. The first came on a Tom Lind 3-yard run, the second on Robert Slayton's 18-yard pass Scott Snow. The Eagles' first score, which tied it at 7-7, was a 57-yard strike from Slayton to Rocky Johnston. Rogue River (0-2) scored in the second quarter when quarterback Matt Fredrick connected with Jake Cornelison with a 28-yard TD pass. The Chiefs tacked on a safety and a field goal in the fourth quarter. Rogue River defensive end Justin Schram tackled a Coquille ball carrier in the end zone with about five minutes left. Fred Perryman made a 32-yard field goal to complete the scoring. ETNA, CALIF., 37, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 7 - At Etna, the Lions took a 27-0 halftime lead in the non-conference game Saturday. Cascade Christian's touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard pass from John Gettman to Kevin Roberts. Mychal Sha kicked the PAT. The Challengers are 1-1.
