Family grateful for help I am curious about the little girl who had a weight problem. You ran an article on her plight and asked for help in sending her to a special camp. I contributed and am wondering if it helped her and her family to lose weight. I felt so sorry for the little girl. Thank you. -- Jean F., Medford By coincidence, your letter coincides with the Whaley family's efforts to thank the community for its generosity. Much has happened since last summer, says Medford's Washington Elementary School Principal Stephanie Johnson. It was Washington student Annjeanette Whaley, then 11, who was the direct beneficiary of the fund raising. She weighed 275 pounds and was determined medically to be dangerously obese. Thanks to local contributions totaling about $5,500, she was able to attend a special camp and lost about 50 pounds. She's continuing to lose weight and a remaining $250 in the fund-raising account has been sent to the camp for follow-up care. Annjeanette's sister also went to the camp and lost weight. The Whaleys moved to San Diego, where both parents are now working. The children are in school and doing well, Johnson says. Despite the distance, the Whaleys haven't forgotten the generosity of their Medford friends and neighbors, Johnson says. Until they can return, she says, they're considering some sort of public thanks and announcement of their daughters' weight and medical improvements.
