Hidden Valley rumbles past Phoenix, 14-6 PHOENIX � Hidden Valley unleashed its powerful ground game and defeated Phoenix 14-6 in the Skyline Conference football opener for both teams. Led by Josh Mundell and buoyed by the return of Nick Mason, the Mustangs rumbled for 272 yards. "Defensively, we played real well," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler after his team�s third close contest in as many outings. "Their line is just a real good line. They neutralize or control the line of scrimmage." Mundell gained 114 yards on 20 carries. On Hidden Valley�s first touchdown drive of 55 yards in the second quarter, Mundell carried 11 times in 12 plays and punched it in from the 6. Mundell was substituting for Mason, who had played only one series in the previous two games due to an ankle injury. Mason came on in the second half and gained 96 yards on 13 carries. Thirty-five of the yards came on the Mustangs� second scoring drive and set up Rob Adler�s 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Chris Ryder. Phoenix scored with just under five minutes remaining when quarterback Bobby Dawson ran in from the 4. Eric Kessler carried 14 times for 72 yards for Phoenix, which dropped to 1-2 overall. HENLEY 62, LAKEVIEW 19 � At Henley, sixth-ranked Henley (3-0, 1-0 Sky) scored all 62 points in the first half. Kirk Cunningham scored four touchdowns for Henley. Cunningham scored on runs of 7 and 3 yards and on two pass interceptions. Cunningham accounted for 114 of the Hornets� 463 yards on the ground. Henley quarterback Frank Gauntz was 7-of-11 passing for 95 yards and three touchdowns.
