FC Dallas opened the scoring when Michel converted a penalty kick in the 34th. Goaltender Stefan Frei guessed the right way, but Michel kicked it into the right corner. Andres Escobar drew the penalty on Seattle midfielder Marco Pappa’s careless challenge. Pappa redeemed himself with a free kick that set up Alonso’s tying goal. Pappa’s placement kept goalkeeper Raul Fernandez on his line and gave Alonso the room to head it in. Fabian Castillo nearly put Dallas in front in the 90th minute with a 40-yard run and blast that Frei deflected over the goal. The Sounders host the second leg of the total-goals series on Nov. 10. RED BULLS 2, UNITED 0: At Harrison, N.J., Bradley Wright-Phillips and Peguy Luyindula scored, and the New York Red Bulls beat D.C. United 2-0 on Sunday in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Thierry Henry set up both goals with brilliant passes. The first was a no-look assist off his back heel to an unmarked Wright-Phillips, who punched it past goalkeeper Bill Hamid in the 40th minute. Luyindula doubled the lead in the 73rd minute, gathering Henry’s well-placed delivery from midfield and slotting the finish through Hamid’s legs. Hamid finished with five saves, but Luis Robles needed only two to hold United without an away goal. The Red Bulls visit United for the second leg of the total-goals series next Saturday.
