Get Up & Go: April 20 Friday Apr 20, 2018 at 2:01 AM Friday, April 20 Breakfast: The Rogue Valley New Day Network Breakfast will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the Rogue Valley Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St. Ashland. The breakfast speaker will be State Representative Pam Marsh (D) reporting on the short session of the Oregon legislature that ended early last month, what unfinished business will be carried into the regular session next year and the chances for major progress on climate change and state tax reform. The RV New Day Network promotes peace, justice and sustainability in the Rogue Valley. This is a no-waste event, so participants are asked to bring their own utensils, plate, napkin, cup and food to share. Science Lecture: Paul Torrence, who holds a doctorate in chemistry and was an investigator at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson, Arizona, will present “Molecules of Nature: Biodiversity, the Sixth Mass Extinction and the Future of Medicine,” from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 20, in Room 151 in the Science Building on the SOU campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Dr. Torrence will present an argument for nature’s critical role in providing medicines for humanity and how that irreplaceable service is threatened by extinction crisis. Rogue Valley Symphony: The Rogue Valley Symphony, directed by Martin Majkut, will premiere its newly commissioned composition by Rogue Valley composer Ethan Gans-Morse, “How Can You Own the Sky?” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center, 830 N.E. Ninth St., Grants Pass. Gans-Morse’s symphonic poem honors native wisdom and features poetry by Tiziana DellaRovere, read by Brent Florendo. The program also includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, highlighted by soprano Melinda Whittington, mezzo-soprano Rebecca Ringle, tenor Brian Thorsett and baritone Christopheren Nomura, along with the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers and the Rogue Valley Chorale. Majkut will offer talks one hour before each show. Tickets range from $20 to $53 for the Medford shows and $20 to $48 for the Grants Pass show. Tickets are $15 for age 6-22 at all shows.
