"The historic commission was having a little difficulty seeing the historic significance of it," said Medford Urban Renewal Director Kurt Olsen. Construction is scheduled to begin in June on a 412-space, five-story parking structure on the northeast edge of the vacant Winetrout lot at Main and Fir streets. Olsen said part of the proposal included the idea of showing some kind of film on a white portion of a 40-foot-high, half-block long wall. He said the architect had seen such a thing in another city, but it’s just as well the commission removed the idea, because it would have raised all kinds of questions about who decides what films are shown. The parking structure will border Evergreen Way, a planned pedestrian-friendly street to be built west of the train tracks. The lot will contain three other mixed-use buildings to be constructed in phases. "The other buildings horseshoe around it," said Olsen. Advertisement After the parking structure is complete, the "horseshoe" will consist of a building along Eighth Street in the first phase, a building along Fir Street for phase two and a building along Main Street as the third phase. The buildings will be a combination of residential, office and retail space, and will be constructed over a six-year period. Cook Development of Portland will develop the three buildings. Cook has hired MCA Architects in Portland for the design work. The parking structure, to be owned by MURA, was designed by Thompson, Vaivoda and Associates in Portland. Olsen said the parking structure design will go before the MURA board at its Tuesday meeting, and then it goes to the Site Plan and Architectural Commission April 16.
