Super cheerleader South High graduate cheers for the Seattle Seahawks Comment By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 1, 2015 @ 12:01 am By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 1, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News Doug and Lilian Favell of Jacksonville have more incentive than most locals to watch today's Super Bowl.  For the second year in a row, their daughter Tamaria Favell is part of the spectacle. For the past four NFL seasons, Tamaria, a 2007 South Medford High School graduate, has been a Sea Gal, a Seattle Seahawks cheerleader. "Our families get into it," Lilian Favell said. On game days the Favells, including Tamaria's siblings Tasia, Tiarra and Hunter, don Seahawks jerseys and pause the DVR every time the Sea Gals make an appearance. "You have to look at the perimeter of the screen," Lilian said. "We all have big TVs." The Favells received a care package from Tamaria, filled with Seahawks forks and banners, in time for today's game. "My parents and siblings, everyone gets Seahawks everything. Every birthday or Christmas, that's all they get," Tamaria said from Arizona. "It's different because it's not our home stadium," Favell said. "All year we've been dancing to our own music." She likens the experience of appearing in front of millions to the jolt of being immersed in cold water. "It just takes a second and then, it's like, 'Oh, my gosh, look at what I'm doing.' " Favell has the rare opportunity to compare Super Bowls. She recalls last year's event in New York as a time of much excitement and little sleep. "We all slept about 12 hours total in New York,"  she recalls. "Last year we were staying right downtown, so all our events were in Times Square." Tamaria was a cheerleader at South Medford, but her passion for dance developed much earlier, according to her mother. "I put her in dance when she was very young," Lilian Favell said, adding that Tamaria required leg braces in early childhood, and dance was one way to help her develop. After high school, Tamaria was part of Southern Oregon University's cheer team and dance crew. She then transferred to Oregon State University and joined their dance team, the Dam Dancers. She also danced for the Portland Winterhawks hockey team and the Vancouver Volcanoes International Basketball League team. She later transferred to Portland State University and commuted to Seattle during her 2011 rookie year with Sea Gals. During the NFL season, Tamaria practices her dance routines two or three times a week, but she finds herself thinking about them all the time — including in her car when she's stuck in traffic. "None of us want to be that girl that didn't practice," she said. "I think my whole playlist on my phone is Sea Gal music." In the off season, Tamaria tries to be a positive role model for youngsters. All NFL cheerleaders appear at community events and things like hospital visits. She also works as a speaker for a health program developed by the Washington Dairy Council and the NFL's Play 60 youth fitness program. "I do this assembly with Blitz, who's our mascot," Tamaria said. "We talk about food groups and what they should be eating. I get the kids involved, and we do a touchdown competition." Tamaria isn't the only professional athlete in her family. She's related to Kyle Singler, who plays basketball for the Detroit Pistons. "Kyle's uncle is my uncle," Tamaria said. For the Favell family, game day is a rare opportunity for them to see Tamaria, who visits her hometown only about four times a year.
