Anyone from individuals to nonprofit groups and local governmental agencies can apply and compete for project money under the recently reauthorized Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act. The act provides Title II grants for projects that are on or benefit federally managed lands. Projects can range from trail-building to big-game habitat plantings to infrastructure improvements that aid the environment. Projects also can be designed to forge improved relationships between federal land managers and the public. The grants are designed to make investments in public lands while adding to employment rolls, and they are administered through the Bureau of Land Management. The proposed projects will be reviewed by the Southwest Oregon Resource Advisory Council, which will recommend which ones get funded. Those reviews are expected in November, and funding will be available in early 2016. The application deadline is Sept. 4, according to BLM. People or groups interested in pursuing one of the grants are urged by BLM to vet their ideas through the agency's resource-area managers for which the projects are eyed.
