St. Mary's fumbles away game Junior running back John Neff ran for 219 yards and six touchdowns to lead Mohawk to a 47-0 non-league football victory over St. Mary's Saturday evening at Spiegelberg Stadium. Neff scored from 2 and 11 yards out and Sam Clark hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Craig Walker as the Indians of Marcola took a 21-0 lead after one period. St. Mary's hurt its cause with nine fumbles, including seven in the first half. "We worked the kids pretty hard in practice this week because we've got a short week next week, and I think I wore them down," St. Mary's coach Dick Maurer said. "We were a step slow all night, and I'll take the blame." Alex Duncan led the St. Mary's offense with 66 yards on 12 carries and Brandon Emrick chipped in with 40 yards on six attempts. The loss dropped the Crusaders' record to 1-1. "Our center (Gabe Winfrey) twisted his ankle in the first half and we had to shuffle some kids around in the offensive line to compensate," said Maurer, whose team dressed down only 17 players. Maurer praised the efforts of tackle Andy Erickson, who had a strong game on defense and moved over to center on offense when Winfrey was injured. The Crusaders will play a game for the first time at St. Mary's High Thursday at 4 p.m. when they host the Henley junior varsity.
