Ashland police reported at least four personal checks worth a total of $500 were taken from the drop box during December, with the thefts reported over the Christmas holiday weekend. At least two bank accounts were compromised, with fraudulent activity reported on them since the theft. And there could be more the police haven't received reports on yet. "If you popped your bill in there in December, give the city a call," said Ashland police Deputy Chief Warren Hensman. "Or just check your bank." Investigators are in the process of getting records and security camera footage from the affected banks. The drop box has been removed, as police believe it may have been damaged or tampered with during the thefts. "It was certainly manipulated to where it clearly compromised the integrity of the box," Hensman said. Anyone who had their Ashland utilities payment stolen from that drop box — or those with information about the case — should contact Ashland police at 541-482-5211. To verify your utility payment has been received, call the city's utility customer service department at 541-488-6004. The department is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
