On Thursday, Graham did it again. Upside down. Graham scored two goals, including a spectacular bicycle kick, and also had an assist as the Grizzlies continued to surge toward the postseason with their fifth win in a row, 5-1, over Marist at Ashland Middle School. Ashland junior Bryce Rollins added two goals and Leo Duetz two assists for the Grizzlies, who have a half-game lead over Springfield in the Midwestern League standings heading into the last week and a half of the regular season. The Grizzlies (8-2-1, 4-0 MWL) can clinch one of the league’s two automatic berths to the 16-team Class 5A state tournament with a win over Eagle Point on Tuesday. Marist (5-5-2, 2-2) needs to win its final two league games and get some help in order to avoid the play-in round. The Grizzlies and Spartans were in a back-and-forth battle until the 30th minute, when a senior-to-senior-to-senior connection produced what co-head coach Brad Roupp called one of the prettiest goals he’s ever seen. Aiden Locklin started the series by passing the ball ahead to Lars Filson, who lifted the ball into the box to Graham, whose perfectly-timed flip-and-kick gave Ashland a stunning 1-0 lead. Roupp tried to describe the finish. “It was a true, over the head, upside down, looking backwards toward the opposite goal bicycle kick,” he said. “It was serious. The ball was coming in across the field at about 8 feet in the air and Stenley just rose up and flipped over and drove it into the back of the net.” “Even the fans from Marist were like, ‘Wow,’” Guled said. Sophomore Jade Boucher also scored for Ashland. NORTH VALLEY 2, PHOENIX 1: At Talent, for the second straight match, Phoenix lost after holding the lead when North Valley scored on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute at Colver Field. For the Pirates, Carlos Camacho found the back of the net on an assist from Isia Espania to put Phoenix (8-3, 6-2 Skyline Conference) ahead 1-0 with just seconds to play in the first half. The lead would have been 2-0 at the break if not for an offsides penalty that called back a goal moments earlier. The Knights tied it on David McLittle’s goal in the 64th minute. CHURCHILL 1, EAGLE POINT 0, OT: At Eugene, Eagle Point couldn’t capitalize on four point-blank opportunities in the final moments of regulation, and Churchill scored in overtime. The Eagles (7-4, 2-2 Midwestern League) outshot the Lancers 9-7, but Churchill’s Marcos Canales made his count in the 95th minute. Goalkeeper Omar Escobedo came up with five saves for the Eagles. Girls Soccer MARIST 3, ASHLAND 1: At Ashland, Marist scored the go-ahead goal in the 36th minute and added an insurance goal in the second half to hand Ashland its first Midwestern League loss. Senior Samantha Lilley scored Ashland’s lone goal in the 25th minute to tie the game 1-1, getting in the way of a clearance attempt by the Marist keeper and connecting from short range. The Spartans (8-2-2, 4-0 MWL) reclaimed the lead on a wild scramble in front of the goal in the 36th minute and tallied again in the 58th. Ashland is 7-1-4, 2-1-1 in the MWL. CHURCHILL 2, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eugene, Eagle Point kept Churchill at bay in the second half but surrendered two first-half goals. Kylee Smith and Krystal Van Dyke played well defensively for the Eagles (2-6-4, 0-3-1 Midwestern League). NORTH VALLEY 7, PHOENIX 1: At Merlin, Phoenix struck first on Daniela Escobedo’s goal in the opening 10 minutes before North Valley pulled away. Lizbeth Parra picked up the assist on Escobedo’s shot for the Pirates (1-9-1, 0-8 Skyline Conference).
