Also wondering how many were local kids. I sure wish the state had something like that when I was a teenager. It took me four years before I killed my first deer. — T.J., Medford Half of the 16 young guns bagged a black-tailed deer during their hunt of a lifetime at the C2 Cattle Company ranch off Highway 140 during the recent holidays, T.J. The eight local and eight non-local hunters were all drawn in a special lottery for these hunts, which have been offered since 2006 at the 9,500-acre ranch as part of the state Access and Habitat Program, says Vince Oredson, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife habitat biologist who oversees the program here The ODFW raffles off these hunt slots, and the winners were able to hunt the ranch during the 630T Rogue Unit Youth Deer Hunt, which opened Dec. 15 and concluded Tuesday. The kids each won one-day affairs for either a buck or doe deer, and the ranch provided a guide. The successful hunters collectively bagged six bucks and two does, Oredson says. "They got a couple of really nice bucks, and I think it went really well," he says. It's a great trade-off, and not just for the kids. Under the program, the ranch receives about $12,000 a year in herbicides, buckbrush- and blackberry-cutting. Of that, the A&H Program pays $9,000, ODFW pays $2,000 toward fertilizer, and the Oregon Hunters Association kicks in $1,000 for buckbrush-cutting. Along with the habitat work, C2 hosts the youth deer hunt, a youth turkey hunt in the spring and an adult archery hunt in the fall. Last year, three of the 16 youth hunters bagged a buck during their guided day, Oredson says. Incidentally, T.J., waiting four years to bag a buck during the general rifle season in the Southern Cascades isn't all that bad, considering that success rates run anywhere from 22 percent to 25 percent, depending upon the year.
