PREP WRESTLING North, Crater in fourth after Day 1 Host of locals advance to today's state semifinals Comment By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry MailTribune.com By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry Posted Feb. 27, 2016 at 2:00 AM Updated Feb 27, 2016 at 5:32 PM By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry Posted Feb. 27, 2016 at 2:00 AM Updated Feb 27, 2016 at 5:32 PM » Social News PORTLAND — North Medford and Crater expected a tight battle for a team trophy in their respective wrestling state tournaments and, after a mostly positive Day 1 on Friday, each program has put itself in position to accomplish that feat with another solid showing today at the Memorial Coliseum. North Medford advanced three of its 10 state qualifiers into the Class 6A tournament semifinal round — seniors Henry Cox, Cole Hornbrook and Wyatt Westfall — and has two others in the consolation bracket in juniors Dominic Deitrick and Justin Geyer. Crater was able to push four of its 15 state qualifiers in the 5A tourney into this morning’s semifinals — sophomores Zeth Brower and Logan Meek, junior Jace Godley and senior Cavin Gillispie — with senior Tommy Winningham, junior Wally Pendleton and sophomore Beau Crawford still in contention in the consolation bracket. Bolstered by those efforts, North Medford and Crater each find themselves entering today’s final rounds in fourth place — but with not a lot of cushion. “Right now we still have seven guys alive so if we can pull seven placers and get some guys in the finals, who knows what happens and we’ll be right in there for a trophy,” said Crater head coach Greg Haga. “It’s kind of a dogfight right now ... we make a jump, they make a jump. That’s kind of the whole state tournament in a nutshell.” Roseburg has a comfortable edge in the 6A tournament with 159 points, followed by Newberg (113), David Douglas (100.5), North Medford (64.5), Century (53), Aloha (49.5), Glencoe (49.5) and Sprague (48). “It’s tough out there,” said North Medford head coach Phillip Lopez, whose team is vying for its third state trophy (top-four finish) after placing third last year and in 2010. “Between the Nos. 4 and 10 teams, we’re all pretty even.” As expected, Hermiston has full control of the 5A race with 104.5 points but then things get interesting. Churchill, which finished second to Crater in last week’s Midwestern League championships, stands second with 75 points and is closely followed by Dallas (72), Crater (70), Lebanon (68), Sandy (62.5) and Redmond (56.5). Eagle Point, which advanced senior Bryan O’Neil into today’s 5A semifinals, stands 11th overall with 32 points. Cox, who has placed third the past two years and is a No. 2 seed, was in full control of his three matches Friday to return to the semifinal round with two pins and a 6-0 decision in the quarterfinals at 113 pounds. Likewise, the seventh-seeded Hornbrook was especially impressive by capping his opening-day run at 160 with a pin in 23 seconds against No. 2 seed Navene Binder of Franklin. Not to be outdone, the top-seeded Westfall opened defense of his title at 170 with a first-round pin and an 18-3 technical fall win over Barlow’s Thomas Cousins. “They’re our go-to guys and they’ve been that way all year,” said Lopez. “They’ve been pretty consistent and they’re all state placers. They’ve been here before and this stage doesn’t scare them anymore. They have goals and hopefully they’ll get it.” Also in the 6A tourney, Grants Pass stands 11th with 43 points and advanced junior Trajan Hurd (152) and Aaron Little (285) into the semifinals, with seniors Ted Sutters (152) and James Jarrett (220) still at play in the consolation bracket. Brower, the No. 1 seed at 106 in the 5A tourney, had little trouble making it to his second straight semifinal with fellow sophomore Logan Meek, who earned two pins at 145 as the No. 2 seed. Godley, seeded third at 152, escaped an opening-round upset with a 12-11 decision and then returned to form with a 56-second pin in the quarterfinals to earn his first berth to the semis. Gillispie, who owns two top-four finishes, pinned both of his opponents to keep hope alive for his first-ever state title. “As it goes, I was proud of our four that got into the semis,” said Haga. “I think all four of them have a real legitimate shot of getting into the finals.” “All of our semifinal winners,” he added, “I thought did a pretty good job of just keeping the heat on them and wrestling tough.” Senior Tommy Winningham, the No. 5 seed at 170, just missed his chance at another state semifinal appearance when his 5-2 lead was whittled away in the third period against fourth-seeded Jeff Dunagan of Dallas. An escape, a stalling point for pushing Dunagan out of bounds and a questionable takedown with four seconds remaining resulted in a 6-5 loss for Winningham. “That’s the way it goes up here and if you wrestle close matches then things like that can happen a little bit,” said Haga. “In true fashion of Tommy Winningham, he came back and got all the consolation guys together in the back room there and said, ‘Hey look, we’ve got to get after it and now we’re going to go to the next best thing, which is third.’ Being the leader that he is, he’s going to lead the charge in that.” Pendleton (195) and Crawford (220) also stand three wins away from a third-place finish. For Eagle Point, a little bit of youth and a host of tough matchups led to only three of its 14 state qualifiers moving on to Day 2. The fifth-seeded O’Neil earned a repeat berth in the state semifinals with a pair of steady victories at 138. “He had a great quarterfinal match and dominated his opponent,” EP head coach Kacey McNulty said of O’Neil’s 10-1 major decision over No. 4 seed Rafael Vasquez of Woodburn. “He controlled the situation and he’s doing a good job here.” “I feel bad for our other seniors, but they had the opportunity,” added McNulty. “They just fell short in some situations but they’re great kids.” Seniors Gage Graves (160) and Scott Martin (182) bounced back from quarterfinal losses to remain alive in the consolation bracket. All four of Ashland’s 5A state qualifiers went 0-2 on Friday. The most consistent day for a Southern Oregon program was put in by Class 4A Phoenix, which brought five wrestlers to state and will see all five of them compete on Day 2. Cedar King (138), Justin Knight (170) and Trace Vega (195) all advanced to the championship semifinals, while fellow seniors Zach Atteberry (126) and Mark McAllister (145) are one win away from becoming state placers. King is a repeat semifinalist and earned his spot with a 7-3 win over No. 4 seed Korey Grende of Baker, while Knight scored a 6-4 sudden victory win over No. 4 seed Alan Bordeaux of Cottage Grove and the second-seeded Vega cruised with two pins. In 3A competition, Cascade Christian junior heavyweight Moses Jackson scored a pair of pins to put himself in position for the program’s first state title with his spot in the championship semifinals. Teammate Max Valle, a junior, remains in contention in the consolation bracket. At the 2A/1A level, Butte Falls senior Luke McGonagle shook off a quarterfinal loss to earn a fall in 3:42 for the Loggers’ first-ever points at the state tournament. McGonagle, who is the second-year program’s first state qualifier, is two wins shy of finishing third overall at 195. In the girls exhibition state championships, North Medford’s Kyleigh Lopez (113) and Aniseta Acosta (170) joined Ashland’s Joanne Lemley (152) in earning wins to advance into today’s championship finals.
