Coe carries North past Churchill At one time, Churchill of Eugene provided a hurdle North Medford couldn't clear in the Class 4A state softball playoffs. But Tuesday at Fagone Field, North Medford defeated the Lancers 1-0 for the Black Tornado's third consecutive playoff win over its former nemesis. North also defeated Churchill in 1995 and 1996 first-round games. The fourth-ranked Black Tornado (22-6) returns to the quarterfinals for its sixth straight year when it visits Redmond for a noon game Monday. Redmond, the Intermountain Conference second-place team, advanced to the round of eight with a 1-0 victory over Tigard. North Medford's Steph Coe, the Southern Oregon Conference player of the year, was matched in an even pitching duel with Midwestern League player of the year Kristin Obie. Both pitchers struck out nine and didn't walk a batter. The difference came down to Coe's bat, not the junior's arm. Coe set up North's winning run with a one-out, fourth-inning triple to the right-center field fence. The next batter, Jill Carrigan, scored pinch-runner Brandi Paxton with a sacrifice fly. North had to survive threats by the Lancers in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the victory. Kira Enlow smacked an one-out triple in the sixth for the Lancers, but Amy Allen speared Erin Paddock's line drive and stepped on third to double up Enlow to end the threat. In the seventh, Kayla Lewis reached on a one-out error and Alissa VanGorden followed with a single to put runners on first and third. But Coe struck out the next two batters to end the game. "Steph really battled and got those two key strikeouts," said North Medford coach Larry Binney. "She was ahead of the hitters all day. She did a tremendous job against a very good Churchill team." ROSEBURG 5, NORTH SALEM 1 -- At Salem, surprising Roseburg used a three-hit complete game from junior Molly Liston to advance into the state quarterfinals against North Eugene. The Indians (20-8), the SOC No. 3 team, will host the Midwestern League champion at 1 p.m. Monday. The Vikings only run was unearned against Liston, who struck out four and walked two. Liston added an RBI in the first and an RBI single in the seventh. Roseburg junior shortstop Erin Goodell reached base on an error in the first, then scored the Indians second run of the inning on Liston's ground out. Goodell also provided a two-run double in the third. Junior outfielder Nataly Tatone contributed two of the Indians' seven hits. Catcher Allison Bailey got both Rogue River hits -- a double in the fourth and a single in the seventh. The only other Rogue River base runners were Katie Glasscock, who reached on an error in the third, and a walk to Brittney Artoff in the sixth. Glasscock, a freshman, struck out five, walked five and was touched for 10 hits. Marist got the only run it needed on Kristen Stacy's two-out RBI single in the second inning. Stacy ended with two hits and two RBIs. The Eagles exploded for six runs in the fifth inning on six hits, one hit batter and one walk. Rogue River, the Skyline Conference runner-up, completed the season with a 20-8 record. MARY'S 0 -- At Corvallis, Santiam Christian pitchers Vanessa Howell and Abigail Harter combined for a one-hitter with nine strikeouts to eliminate the District 6 runner-up from the Class 2A/1A state playoffs. Shawna Jackson's one-out single in the third accounted for St. Mary's lone hit. Jackson also walked twice to reach base in all three at-bats. The Crusaders (20-5) twice had runners at second and third, with one out in the third and two out in the fifth. The Eagles bunched three singles to score the winning run on a passed ball in the sixth inning. Santiam ended with seven singles off St. Mary's junior pitcher Lani Brophy, who lost for the third time in 15 decisions. "The hits they had seemed to find the holes," St. Mary's coach Robin Snider said. "Their hitters didn't overpower us." Neither team committed an error. "They came up with some big plays when we put the ball in play," said Snider, "and our teamed played exceptional defense also. Kim Hansen had a great day at second base." NORTH DOUGLAS 3, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 -- At Jacksonville, Katie Plumb struck out nine and allowed just four hits to lead North Douglas past Cascade Christian in an eight-inning, first-round state tournament game. The Challengers scored the game's first run on an RBI by Becky Gettman but couldn't hold the lead. North Douglas scored twice in the top of the eighth on an error, two singles and a walk. Hannah Gettman led Cascade, who ended its season 17-10, with two hits while Plumb went 3-for-4 for North Douglas.
