Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 11, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Sep. 11, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Sept. 11, 1915 BUSINESS COLLEGE OPENS SECOND YEAR MONDAY, SEPT. 14 An educational institution which is rapidly forging ahead in the estimation of the public, is the Medford Commercial College, which was established a year ago by Mr. and Mrs. B.I. Van Gilder and Mrs. S.H. Baumann, who have proved themselves to be commercial teachers of unusual abilities. The school will enter upon the second year of its existence next Monday, Sept. 14th, when its fall term opens. Plans have been made for increased efficiency in all departments, as it is the policy of the managers to give their students every facility possible, which will assume the successful completion of their courses of study. A feature connected with the work of the school which has proved very popular, and which has created considerable enthusiasm among the students, is the monthly "Contest Day." On the last Friday of each month, various contests are held and efficiency awards are presented to the winners. The awards are presented by some business or professional man, who delivers a short address which is listened to with much interest by the students, and which serves to stimulate them to still greater efforts in their studies. These contests will be continued during the coming year, and some new features will be added. Another feature not found in many similar schools is the office practice department, which has a complete equipment of of modern office appliances. Every student, before graduating, is required to spend a certain amount of time in this office, where he is taught to do things required in every well-regulated business office. The result is that every graduate of the school "makes good" to a marked degree upon accepting a position. Plans have been made to render this department still more efficient, as the managers believe in progress, their motto being "Do today better than yesterday." The courses of study offered by the Medford Commercial college are very complete and practical, the teachers seeking to give their students those things which will be of real help to them in after years. Non-essentials are eliminated, and subjects are taught which have both a cultural and practical value. In arranging the course of study, and selecting the texts and systems used, the managers are unhampered by anyone "higher up," with the result that intensely interesting and instructive courses are offered to the young people of southern Oregon.
