COLLEGE FOOTBALL UO's Loyd sets sights on end zone By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Nov. 26, 2014 @ 5:56 pm By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Nov. 26, 2014 @ 5:56 pm » Social News EUGENE — Johnathan Loyd was in the end zone at Autzen Stadium following a 64-yard punt return before he saw the penalty flag for holding that nullified his touchdown. “I was let down,” Loyd said of his fourth-quarter return in Saturday’s 44-10 win over Colorado. “I felt like I finally could have redeemed myself with that one.” Loyd is referring to the previous game at Utah when he returned a punt 51 yards and got past all the Utes except punter Tom Hackett, who tripped him up at the 17-yard line. “My football IQ didn’t kick in,” Loyd said. Loyd came within a shoelace and a penalty flag of returning two of his past three punts for touchdowns, but holds out hope of finding the end zone on a punt return before the season is over. “It’s on the way,” he said. Loyd caught a 5-yard touchdown pass earlier this season against Wyoming, one of his two catches this season. He has four punt returns for 56 yards after Saturday’s 64-yard touchdown turned into a 9-yard return following the penalty. When Loyd made the surprising decision to join the football team this year after four years of basketball, special teams seemed to be his best chance to help the Ducks, and that’s becoming reality late in the season. “My favorite thing about football is punt returns so I am just enjoying myself,” Loyd said. “I’m comfortable.” Loyd, an all-state kick returner at Bishop Gorman High School in Nevada as a senior when he had eight touchdowns on kickoff and punt returns, said he had a feeling of calm as he ran toward the end zone against the Buffaloes in front of what remained from a sellout crowd. “I just felt comfortable, it was like high school out there,” Loyd said. “That’s truly how it felt. ... I made the first guy miss and the whole right side of the field was open so I cut back and got on my horse.” Charles Nelson has been UO’s primary punt returner this year, but Loyd is ready when he is sent out to the field. “You never know, but I’m just going to stay ready so I don’t have to get ready,” he said. Loyd will play in his first football Civil War on Saturday after going 7-2 against the Beavers in basketball, including a 2-1 mark last season. His last trip to Corvallis was an 80-72 loss to the Beavers in January. “I think it is going to be a little more hectic in football,” Loyd said. “A lot more screaming fans and more passion because you only play them one time a year. It’s going to be a good one.” Loyd set the school record by playing in 144 basketball games, including 97 victories, and ranks in the top five in career steals and assists. He has kept close watch on his former team while playing for a new one. “They’re playing well, playing hard and scrapping,” Loyd said. “I think they’re buying into what coach Altman is saying. If they do that, they’ll be fine this year.” Loyd helped lead the Ducks to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in mens basketball. Now he has the opportunity to help Oregon reach the inaugural college football Final Four. “It is a blessing,” he said. “I talked with (special teams coach Tom Osborne) and he said it is just like the NCAA Tournament now. You lose and you go home so now we just have to win.” Loyd has played in six games this fall that he said made his decision to stick around for the fall a good one. “Not many people can say they did this,” Loyd said. “It was an opportunity I had to run with.
