Acoustic music lovers can hear American roots, Celtic tunes, Delta blues and folk songs, including original tunes and some original arrangements, mostly presented solo by each musician, with the occasional duet. The largely instrumental presentation revolves around stories of American rivers, Celtic kings, life, memories and the heart, and promises to include dazzling and tasteful fretwork. The show starts at 7:30 at the Imperial, 40 N. Front St. Tickets cost $15 in advance and can be purchased by calling 541-779-2042. Tickets will cost $20 at the door. See www.imperialeventcenter.com or call 541-779-2042 for information.  The American Masters Tour is a response to the shifting face of American music. “The major changes in the music industry, starting around 2007, unfortunately included the severe diminishing of focus on music like ours in favor of the big money genres,” Janson says. “Instrumental acoustic guitar music and acoustic singer and songwriter styles of music were at one time placed in such categories as new age, acoustic instrumental and folk and Americana.” Janson says those genres are no longer listed in the iTunes store, and though new age remains a Grammy Awards category, folk and Americana has become American roots or regional roots, and contemporary instrumental isn’t necessarily acoustically oriented. “And of course the brick and mortar music stores are almost non-existent today," he says. "Back in 2010 it was really obvious that these types of changes were coming. It seemed to us that creating a concert series that focused on our styles of music, and in particular acoustic-based guitar music, was necessary. "Our American Guitar Masters tours are special to me because Steve, Larry and I share a devotion to the heart and soul of acoustic guitar music, and to the music that is tied to history and tradition,” Janson says. “At these concerts, we get to bring forth the highest level of emotive qualities of the music while making it fresh and authentic. Our goal is to help people have a great night out listening to some cool, if somewhat obscure, music.” With more than 75 years of combined performance experience, headlining concerts from coast to coast, each of the three musicians has garnered his share of acoustic guitar awards. Janson hails from Boston; Davison from Little Rock, Ark., and the most local, Pattis, lives in the Creswell area. Patts is drawn to classical and folk guitar, along with advanced acoustic guitar techniques like Leo Kottke. “When I was a teenager living in suburban Chicago in the early '70s, I fell in love with those two styles of guitar and essentially pursued that through my college years and beyond,” Pattis says. Influenced by classical guitar players Andre Segovia and Julian Bream, Pattis composed and arranged his blend of classical, Celtic, and folk on steel-string acoustic guitar. Ironically, ergonomic and health issues recently caused him to switch from steel-strings to a nylon-stringed classical guitar. “We’re three solo artists, playing in a round-robin fashion, rubbing elbows and telling stories," he says. "It’s a fun format because somebody might say or play something that changes the direction of what I might play. It’s all very spontaneous, and we feed off of each other’s energy. The evening itself will certainly be musical entertainment but the whole point of us sharing the stage elbow to elbow is to tell stories and, by the storytelling, to draw any concertgoers into our world. The evening is about music that is drawn from human commonalities.” “For me personally," Janson says, "I don’t write music for other acoustic guitar players. I write music to communicate with people. Yes, I have guitar ‘chops,’ but the music is about sharing experiences, telling stories and exploring issues of what it’s like to be human." Learn more at www.americanguitarmasters.com.
