Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 4, 1915 Mount McLaughlin, wrongly called Mount Pitt by some, that lordly looking peak to the east, has entered the same class as Mount Lassen, according to D.A. Hanscom of Agate. On Thursday, that slumbering mount emitted smoke, visible from the "desert." Mr. Hanscom saw the smoke, and says a number of his neighbors did the same. Since then, there have been clouds over the summit, and they have been unable to take note of any further activity. Mount McLaughlin is 10,000 feet high, and in the same chain as Mount Lassen. As far as anyone knows, Mount McLaughlin is an inactive peak, though from time to time it has been reported that it showed signs of volcanic inclinations, never violent, however. Mr. Hanscom is firm in his belief that he saw smoke pouring from the crest. So are his neighbors. There have been no reports from other points in the eastern part of the county relative to any unusual condition at the mountain.   Spring weather, with possible April showers , is the weather for Easter promised by the weather bureau in contrast to the heaviest snow storm of the year throughout the east. Conditions for the wearing of new gowns and hats will be ideal. There are a profusion of flowers for the day. Special Easter services, with music as a prominent feature, will be given in the churches of the city. The titanic struggle raging in Europe will play an important part in the sermon themes, one subject dealing with the possible ejection of the Turks from Europe. The service in many of the churches will uphold the significance of the day to the children. Live rabbits and eggs — the chief commodities of the season — are plentiful. The first are selling at 35 cents apiece, and the latter from 15 to 20 cents per dozen.
