Mail Tribune 100, July 25, 1922 By Alissa Corman Jul 25, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago July 25, 1922 CAUGHT TERRILL SMOKING CIGARETTE KINGSBURY SPGS. Another series of affidavits, attacking Sheriff Charles E. Terrill, and accusing him of being opposed to the prohibition law enforcement were scattered about the city this afternoon by boys. The circular is headed, “Does not Believe in Enforcement,” and is signed in a general way, “Authorized by the General Committee, W. D. Hughes, Chairman.” What “the general committee,” is, is not stated. The opening affidavit is by J. A. Hemstreet, who subscribes and swears before F. C. Edmeades as notary public, “that while sitting in the police station on or about the first of June, 1921, in conversation with Mr. Terrill about the enforcement of the prohibition law, Mr. Terrill remarked to me that he did not believe in the enforcement of the prohibition law, as the Prohibition law was not popular with the people.” Hemstreet was a member of the local police force at the time, and was ousted from his position, as a result of a hubbub arising from the Bulgin revival meetings, and it is generally known that Hemstreet was considerably put out by his forced retirement from office. Praise for Prohibition Officer Sandifer, and his “savings” to the county are alleged, also in the circular. Mrs. G. Jordan, 203 East Main street, Ashland, alleges that while attending a dance at Kingsbury Springs December 3, 1921, “that I did smell liquor on said C. E. Terrill’s breath.” Edward Coovling, 176 Mountain Avenue, Ashland, swear that at the same place, and time as above, that “said C. E. Terrill was smoking cigarettes, and smelled strongly of liquor.” Mrs. Coovling submits a substantiating affidavit. It is hinted in the circular that there will be more affidavits forthcoming between now and Saturday. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The meeting of the chamber of commerce in the city hall last night was significant in that it clearly demonstrated that if there is any more fighting to be done it is going to be left to Sheriff Terrill and the W. C. T. U. The chamber is working as one man in the interest of Ashland, and personal animosities have been cast in the discard.
