The Pirates won their eighth straight game and their ninth in the last 10 outings by dispatching North Valley, 51-42, in Skyline Conference boys basketball. The Pirates, coming off an upset of No. 2-ranked Mazama, improved to 6-0 in league and 10-6 overall. Phoenix bolted out to an 11-0 start before the Knights kicked it in. "Then we kind of relaxed, and they played hard," said Pirates coach Kevin Dixon. North Valley, getting 12 first-half points from Derek Armstrong, managed to tie it, 20-20, by halftime. In the second half, Armstrong was limited to six points, including one in the fourth quarter. "We played very good defense in the second half to shut down Armstrong," said Dixon. Junior point guard Brett Ellis had an outstanding shooting night for the Pirates, making 5-of-7 3-pointers en route to 23 points. He also had six rebounds and two steals. Brady Rhodes contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix. PHOENIX (51) — Smith 6, Rhodes 11, Crockett 4, Barrett 0, Lockett 3, Ellis 23, Bones 0, Gonzalez 4. Hesia scored 28 points and notched nine assists and nine steals. Tyler Larson added 20 points and 11 rebounds. Eric Brosterhous had 15 points and Kyle Slezak 10 rebounds for the Vikings. In regulation, North Valley’s Robert Gessen tied the game with a late basket. The Knights had two shots at winning the game but neither fell before the regulation buzzer sounded. Klug scored 26 points and Cody Biller 11 for North Valley (7-9, 3-3 Skyline). Ryan Nash led Lakeview with 16.
