Sen. Jeff Merkley has endorsed Sanders, demonstrating he is listening to the heartbeat of Oregonians who want bold changes. I support both senators' work to advance a living-wage economy and fair trade deals instead of the TPP. They both energize grassroots activists — especially youth — to be in the center of the electoral process, while working to move Big Money out of the process. They take a diplomacy-first approach to foreign relations, supporting the Iran deal as well as the Cuban breakthrough. I'm proud that my senator took a courageous stand by endorsing the only presidential candidate who champions these ideas and supports universal single-payer healthcare and free public college education. These policy solutions can lift up the lower and middle classes toward a brighter future. Brenda Gould Ashland Vote Marsh, Thomas, Clinton Registered Democrats can vote for two good candidates, Pam Marsh for state representative, 5th District, and Jeff Thomas, county commissioner, Position 2. For president, if you are undecided, let me make the case for Hillary Clinton. Please read her statement in the pamphlet. She is well qualified and has performed remarkably well in the public offices she has held. She has earned the trust, respect and endorsement from colleagues over many years. In campaign events, she is often joined by elected officials and supporters. A team player, she has raised money for other Democrats running for office. She knows how to get things done and is passionate about her causes. Currently she is ahead, by a significant margin, in delegates and popular votes. I am confident she can prevail in the November election if nominated. Please help her become the first woman president of the United States. Steve Haskell Ashland Sunshine and compliments Sunshine and flowers and recent letters to the editor have made me feel compelled to compliment some folks. First I want to cheer for the South Medford Poetry Slam that was so eloquently praised in a letter in the April 17 paper. Kudos to all involved in that event. Next I want to compliment the folks involved in the redo of Hawthorne Park. It fills me with joy to drive by and see all the families enjoying this gem. I especially love the painting done to the formerly ugly concrete pillars under the freeway. They are stunning! More please. Last, I would like to sing the praises of Judge Crain and the Drug Court Treatment Program. Our family knows firsthand how effective this program can be in helping people turn their lives around. My compliments and thanks to all. Marilyn Fishwick Medford Heritage District levy As a board member of one of the other historical societies in Jackson County, I have followed with interest your news coverage and editorial concerning the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS). I concur with your editorial conclusion that the county commissioners should refer the Heritage District and levy to the voters without further analysis. However, there has been a serious omission in both your news coverage and your editorial regarding this tax levy that needs to be corrected. The proposed Heritage District and tax levy has always been intended to support all the historical societies and museums in Jackson County. The Heritage District will be managed by an independent elected board of directors. It is this board (with input from all of the historical societies and museums), not SOHS, that will decide how the funds from this levy will be allocated to the various organizations. It’s not just about SOHS. I hope you keep this in mind in future coverage of this issue. Jerry Hellinga Southern Oregon Railway Historical Society Medford Positives for Trump I see big negatives with Donald Trump, primarily his foot-in-mouth, continually speaking-before-thinking syndrome. However, I point to three big positives: border security, skepticism of our endless wars and economic nationalism. Also, I look around: Obama is against Trump, the establishment Democrats and the media, too. The establishment Republicans are all against Trump, especially the neocons that run foreign policy. The Pope is against Trump. Amen. The U.N. is against Trump; ditto the E.U., China’s Communist government, Mexico’s governing gangsters and world-class arch-criminal George Soros. Black Lives Matter is against Trump, also MoveOn.org , and throw in the billionaire Koch Brothers for diversity. Every hateful, racist, violent liberal/progressive is now crawling out from under the rocks to demonstrate against Trump. Bonus points: Cher says she’ll leave the country upon Trump’s presidency; also Miley Cyrus, Whoopi, Rosie and Al Sharpton. OK, I’m convinced. Definitely! Trump for president!
