The hunts on the C2 Cattle Co. ranch near Lake Creek are filled through a drawing by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Winners get one day of guided turkey hunting on the ranch, either during the youth turkey season that runs April 9-10 or any time during the general spring season, which runs April 15-May 31. One nonhunting adult may accompany the youth. To enter, apply at the ODFW Central Point office, 1495 E. Gregory Road, or online at www.dfw.state.or.us/lands/AH/docs/C2_Application.pdf Applications can be faxed to 541-826-8776 or emailed to vince.j.oredson @state.or.us. Applications will be taken through March 31, and the drawing will occur the following day at ODFW's Central Point office, says Vince Oredson, an ODFW habitat biologist who oversees the program. Last year, eight of the 10 kids who were chosen in the drawing ended up hunting at the ranch, and five bagged toms, Oredson says. This year's winners must supply their own juvenile hunting license and juvenile turkey tag and earn a hunter-education certificate. Kids ages 9 to 13 who don't have the hunter-education certificate may hunt under the Mentored Youth Hunter Program by using an adult's tag, but only during the general spring season. The A&H Program gave C2 Ranch a grant to fund myriad habitat projects for big game and other wildlife. In return, the ranch owners agreed to provide guided youth deer hunts and adult archery deer hunts last fall and will offer 10 youth turkey hunts this spring. Rogue FlyFishers host fishing class The Medford-based Rogue FlyFishers Association is holding a one-day fly-fishing class April 23 in Gold Hill for beginners in order to get participants primed for fishing the Rogue River for steelhead and trout. The class will cover everything from basic knots, insects and the artificial flies that imitate them to wading gear, rods, reels, lines and leaders. The final portion of the class will cover casting and how best to present the fly. It will also focus on how to fish for trout during the Rogue River's stonefly hatch, which occurs on the upper Rogue in late spring. The class is for current RFF members and costs $35. Nonmembers can go to www.rogueflyfishers.org and sign up. There is also an optional $10 fee for a copy of the book "The Curtis Creek Manifesto." The club has rods and reels for use as loaners, but participants can bring their own gear. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the clubhouse of the Madrone Hill Mobile Home Park, 8401 Old Stage Road, off Interstate 5's Gold Hill exit. The class will be taught by John MacDiarmid, an International Fly Fishing Federation certified casting instructor. Email him at [email protected] or call 541-840-0183 to register.
