Expanding on comments he made to KOBI-TV, Hare said he never intended to serve more than one term. “I have always felt that public office should not be a career,” he told the Daily Courier Friday. Hare has made comments to that effect during public meetings at the courthouse. On Friday, he re-asserted those claims. “I will not seek another term,” he said. “What’s different this time is that I’ve recycled all my signs.” “It gives me energy to know that I won’t be here for much longer,” he said in the KOBI interview. “I will try to get as much done in the time provided and leave it up to someone else to take over this board and this position.” The commissioner said that the only reason he sought a second term, which he’s currently serving and ends in 2018, was because he felt there was unfinished business from his first. Hare is also in the midst of a recall effort led by Mark Kelsey, a local trucker and Facebook moderator who’s running for Position 2 on the Board of Commissioners. Keith Heck currently holds that position on the board. Kelsey initiated the recall process after Hare’s DUII arrest last month in Eugene. The commissioner was in town for a meeting of the Association of O&C Counties, a collective of county officials who discuss timber and land-use policy. It was Hare’s third public misstep involving alcohol in as many years. In 2013, he was nearly charged with filing a false report after he claimed his car was stolen, only to be recovered a few blocks from his house. And in 2014, he was criticized over a cellphone prank that went wrong. Kelsey told the Daily Courier he hasn’t counted the signatures that have come in so far. He has until March 28 to gather 5,094 from the county’s registered voters. “We’re doing good,” he said.
