By Scott Graves Curry Coastal Pilot Posted Jan. 28, 2016 at 5:23 PM Updated Jan 29, 2016 at 8:00 AM » Social News Highway 101 in Harbor will be closed at 9 p.m. today — or earlier — because a widening sinkhole is threatening to undermined all four lanes, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). Meanwhile, Shopping Center Avenue, which runs parallel to the highway on the west side, is closed after a landslide about 50 feet from the sinkhole collapsed an entire section of the road earlier this afternoon. The slide broke a local water main and is within 100 feet of several businesses. By Thursday afternoon, traffic on Highway 101 was limited to one southbound lane and one northbound lane. “Several voids are opening up on the highway. We are monitoring the situation and it’s safe right now, but if something happens anytime before 9 p.m., we will shut the highway down,” said ODOT spokesman Jared Castle. “We chose 9 p.m. because most of the businesses will be closed by that time and they will be less impacted by the closure,” he said. Highway 101 traffic will be diverted to Lower Harbor Road with access points at the Chetco River bridge to the north and Benham Lane in Harbor to the south. The detour will be in place for at least a week, if not longer, Castle said. “We’d like to fix Shopping Center Road first so we can use that as a detour instead of Lower Harbor Road,” he said. The initial sinkhole developed in early December in the parking lot of the Fireside Diner along Highway 101 after torrential rains caused the failure of the culvert that runs from South Coast Shopping Center under the highway toward the Port of Brookings-Harbor. The hole continued to widen as a series of storms pummeled the area and caused the hole to overflow multiple times. ODOT crews uses several pumps to draw water from the hole into a nearby drain. This morning, a small void, or sinkhole, opened up in right-hand lane in northbound side of Highway 101. Workers quickly filled it and set up safety cones directing traffic into a single north-bound lane. “The void was only the size of a bowling ball, but was a seven-foot drop,” Castle said.
