Royals eliminate Roseburg ROSEBURG � It took a little longer than North Jackson would have liked, but the Royals were still able to clinch an American Legion A state playoff berth Saturday. North Jackson (30-10) needed 11 innings to dispatch Roseburg Pepsi, 5-4, for a two-game sweep of the best-of-three series. Ryan Garrett provided the unassuming end to a wild contest when his sacrifice fly in the 11th inning scored Evan Pogue to put the Royals ahead 5-4. Pogue had reached base with a single and then advanced to third after B.J. McFall and Scott Stockton each drew walks. Bryan Strodthoff kept Roseburg at bay in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the victory and stamp North Jackson�s ticket to the state playoffs beginning Friday in Hillsboro. Both teams received outstanding performances from their starting pitchers. Jesse Stevenson went 9� innings for North Jackson, while Michael Myhre went 10� innings for Roseburg. "(Stevenson) pitched a great game, and so did the other kid," said North Jackson coach Tom Britton. "It was an intense game." The game was so intense that Britton was ejected in the 10th inning arguing a controversial double-play call. W � Strodthoff (6-0). L � Norby. 3B � NJ: Garrett. Babe Ruth Baseball The Medford Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars went extra innings to defeat Williamette of Eugene 9-8 on Saturday. Logan Boyd�s solo homer put the team into extra innings. The winning run scored when Troy Marsic advanced with a bunt and Mike Barry singled him in. Barry collected three hits, while Josh Swarez was the winning pitcher. Medford advances to today�s championship game at 2 p.m. at Eugene�s Sheldon Field. The winner of the game will advance to regionals in Montana on Aug. 3. Little League Baseball MEDFORD AMERICAN 2, TIGARD 1 � At Ontario, the Medford American Little League 11-12-year-olds edged Tigard to stay in the state playoff tournament. In Medford�s tournament opener, Tommy George hit a two-run single in the first inning to give them the lead. George drove in Zack James who smacked a single and Jared Adamson who had been hit by a wild pitch. Winning pitcher Tyler Heil stayed cool in the hot weather, striking out 10 batters and allowing only two hits. Medford will face Gresham today at 2:30 p.m. at the Ontario Little League fields.
