(Mail Tribune / Jim Craven) A practice run for firefighters takes an old house Staff reports TALENT — Crews from Jackson County Fire District No. 5 conducted a training exercise that included burning a house on Highway 99 on Tuesday. Crews gathered at the old house near the intersection of Highway 99 (South Pacific Highway) and Suncrest Road about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to start preliminary exercises, including practice rescues. The house, which belonged to Glenn and Gail Berk, had been set for demolition, so the owners offered it to the fire district for training. "They need the practice," said Gail Berk. "We were going to tear it down either way.'' The couple has owned the property for 15 years. They had never lived in the home; instead they chose to rent it out to several businesses over the years, Berk said. Now that the house is gone, the Berks are deciding whether to further develop the property or sell it. Regardless, they had to pay fees and file the proper paperwork before the house was torched. "We didn't save a dime by doing this," Berk said. "There's no financial benefit whatsoever." Jackson County Fire District 5 Chief Don Marshall appreciated the Berks' generosity. "It's a win-win situation for the property owners and the young firefighters who get hands-on training," Chief Dan Marshall said. Would you like to respond to this story?
