The award was announced on Wednesday. On its website, the Sporting News had a question-and-answer session with Singler, a senior forward who was named most outstanding player in the 2010 Final Four, and showed a picture of him hugging his brother, E.J., when the two faced off recently in Portland. E.J. plays for Oregon. The lead paragraph in the Sporting News article was: "The way we see it, no college athlete made a bigger mark on 2010 than Duke's Kyle Singler, who was MVP of the ACC Tournament, most outstanding player at the Final Four and the No. 1 reason Duke made it back to the top of the mountain — and appears ready to stay there awhile." Singler averaged 17.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season. This year, the Blue Devils are ranked No. 1, and his numbers are 16.3 points and 5.4 rebounds. Other honorees by the Sporting News were Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay as professional athlete of the year and Mike Bellamy, running back out of Florida who is headed to Clemson, as high school athlete of the year.
