The workshop is open to adults and kids at least 9 years old who are accompanied by a paying adult. Agency biologists bill the workshop as a well-timed opportunity to learn the ins and outs of fishing on frozen lakes now that virtually all lakes in Oregon are open to year-round fishing, including Hyatt and Howard Prairie lakes. The workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., during which time participants will learn the basics of such topics as safety on the ice, how to drill a hole, what fishing gear to use, and how to clean and take care of the fish they catch. The workshop costs $52 for adults and $12 for kids younger than 18. The cost includes the use of equipment, instruction and lunch. The registration deadline is Jan. 16. Children younger than 12 do not need a fishing license to participate, but adults must have a valid Oregon fishing license and youngsters 12 to 17 will need an Oregon youth license. Siskiyou Mountain Club hiring summer crew The Siskiyou Mountain Club is in the midst of hiring up to 10 crew members and a crew leader to work on trail projects next summer. The crew will spend its summer living out of backpacks, working on remote trail projects in the rugged Siskiyou Mountains, working four 10-day "hitches on various projects," says SMC Executive Director Gabe Howe. The Conservation Corps interns will start with an unpaid training week in mid-June, with work on projects through mid-August. Crew members also have the option of enrolling at Southern Oregon University for the summer term and receiving credit for following a curriculum developed by the club and SOU's Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program. Interns will be paid $40 per day and receive tuition reimbursements. Full details and application instructions are available at www.siskiyoumountainclub.org/jobs/ . Access and Habitat Board position open The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking to fill its landowner representative position on the state Access and Habitat Program's Southwest Regional Council. Landowners with an interest or experience in hunting and/or wildlife conservation are encouraged to apply at ODFW's office at the Denman Wildlife Area by Jan. 31. A landowner representative is someone who owns or manages land used for timber, livestock or other agriculture, but there is no requirement for the number of acres owned or managed, says Vince Oredson, ODFW's wildlife habitat biologist in the Rogue Valley. This is a volunteer position that includes up to four public meetings each year to review access and habitat project proposals and conduct other council business. Meetings may require some travel to various communities in the region, Oredson says.
