Main St., Ashland. Filled with surprising humor, the story is about a 22-year-old man coming down off a drug high on a hot summer day in Arizona. Gregory's fast-paced play takes audiences to 1926, when radium is a miracle cure, Madame Curie is an international celebrity, and luminous watch faces are the latest rage. Until the girls who paint those watch dials begin to die. An examination of the commercialization of science and the American obsessions with pursuit of health and wealth makes this drama relevant and entertaining. 'Lovers: Winners & Losers': Ashland Contemporary Theatre presents Irish playwright Brian Friel's set of two one-act plays that balance young love and a mature relationship. Friel also is author of "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Faith Healer" and "Philadelphia, Here I Come!" Susan Aversa Orrego directs a cast of eight in this story set in Friel's fictional Northern Ireland town of Ballymore. Shows are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7, 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, and various times weekends through Nov. 29 at Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way. Saturday, Nov. 7 'The 39 Steps': Part Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece, part spy novel and part over-the-top comedy, this two-time Tony Award-winner presented by Oregon Cabaret Theatre in Ashland is a fast-paced whodunit that features more that 150 characters, all played by an ensemble of four. A man with a boring life finds himself pursued by a mysterious organization known only as the 39 Steps. Soon after, a woman he just met is murdered in his apartment, then there is an onstage plane crash, a chase on top of moving train cars and some old-fashioned romance — all played for laughs. The show stars John Stadelman, Katie Beck, Justin Waggle and Stephen Kline; Rick Robinson directs. The show runs through Nov. 8. Pianist Laurie Anne Hunter will accompany the singers. The concert is the culmination of a master class in performance skills and operatic improvisation.
