Mail Tribune / Jim Craven Slide clogs Galice Road One lane is open but officials suggest taking other routes Heavy rains have caused a landslide in Josephine County along Galice Road, just past milepost 8. The road is open, but traffic is restricted to one lane, and officials ask people to avoid traveling in the area unnecessarily. Between 200 and 300 cubic yards of mud, rock and vegetation slumped onto the road about a mile past Indian Mary Park and before Morrison’s Rogue River Lodge, officials said Wednesday morning. Although the road winding along the river is prone to slides, this slide was a new one that hadn’t been active before, said Jeff Wheaton, operations supervisor with Josephine County’s Public Works Department. Public works crews evaluated the slide Tuesday morning and determined it was stable enough they could begin clearing the debris without prompting additional sliding. They cleared about a third of the debris from the roadway and plan to continue working through the week to remove it all. Officials estimated the work should be done Friday. The area will be marked with illuminated barricades until the road is cleared. Drivers who must travel in the area are advised to use extreme caution.
