Early bird tickets go on sale to members Dec. 1. Non-members may order too, but tickets won’t be mailed until after May 1. The 2003 classical season runs Aug. 1 through 16. Although over four decades Britt expanded into jazz, folk, country, rock, blues and dance, it started as a small classical festival. The Grammy-winning Manhattan Transfer visits Aug. 10 for a family concert and presents a classical pops show Aug. 11. Oregon performs Aug. 15 in a program that mixes original compositions by members of the ground-breaking jazz/world/chamber group with 20th century classics. Lawn passport tickets return this year. They cost $44 and are good for any three classical shows. Also returning are pre-concert talks, with experts analyzing composers and music. The talks are free with admission and start at 7 p.m. in Britt’s lower garden area. Britt’s Web site has been updated, with more information and a shopping cart program for buying tickets online. Also new is the option of renewing a membership while buying tickets. A new e- mail system has been added to provide updates. Marketing director Kelly Gonzales says it will be used only to send the information requested, such as concert recommendations based on your interests, or notice that a concert is close to selling out. "No spam," she promises. Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the Brazilian guitarists the Assads kick off the season with the Britt Festival Orchestra and music director Peter Bay Aug. 1. The orchestra will play works by Bizet that have never been performed at the festival. An optional champagne picnic before the show is $22. Pianist Jon Kimura Parker visits Aug. 2 for a program of Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Elgar. Regulars may remember him from five years ago, playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson returns Aug. 8 and 9 for a program of works for piano and orchestra with music by Weber and Prokofiev. The Manhattan Transfer, the first group to win Grammys in both pop and jazz in the same year (1981), presents a family concert Aug. 10. Tickets are $22 and $19 (reserved), $14 (lawn) and $4 (children). The next night the orchestra will start the show with Bernstein and Gershwin, then be joined by the Transfer for pop and jazz favorites. Oregon started four decades ago at the University of Oregon and evolved into a unique experiment in jazz/classical/world/chamber music. It’s played with symphony orchestras for years, including making a CD with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow. On Aug. 15, it will join the orchestra with original compositions mixed with music by Respighi and Hindemith. Fourteen-year-old violinist Caitlin Tully performs Aug. 16. Since her debut at 10, she has played with orchestras across North America, leading violin great Yehudi Menuhin to say that she plays with "more integrity" than any young violinist he’s ever heard. The program includes music by Enescu and Barber and culminates in Mussorgsky’s "Pictures at an Exhibition" as orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. Adult tickets range from $14 to $47.
