Firefighters, who are attacking the fire directly from the Rim Road, are reinforcing fire lines and using helicopters for water drops. If weather conditions are favorable, firefighters may light backfires from West Rim Road back down to the fire edge. Firefighters are working to keep the fire east of the Pacific Crest Trail, south of the Lightning Spring Trail and west of Rim Drive. The fire was listed as 12 percent contained Thursday afternoon, with 788 acres burned. There were 340 firefighters on the scene. Firefighting operations are visible from Rim Road. West Rim Road remains closed from Rim Village to North Junction, but East Rim Road is open. Park visitors can expect increased smoke and are asked to drive with lights on. The Pacific Crest Trail is closed from Dutton Creek Camp north to the PCT parking lot on North Entrance Road. PCT hikers should use East Rim Drive as an alternate route. Lightning Spring Trail and backcountry camps are closed. West Rim Drive from Rim Village to North Junction is temporarily closed. Fire danger remains high in the Crater Lake area.
