Karen Sheffield O'Neil Smith Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 25, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 25, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News October 27, 1955 - May 19, 2016 Karen Smith passed away peacefully and surrounded by family and friends May 19, 2016 in Bend, Ore. after a long illness. She was born to Donald and Shirley Sheffield at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif. They settled in Southern Oregon in 1956, and Karen was raised in Jacksonville and Medford, graduating from Medford High School in 1973. She then completed her nursing degree at Southern Oregon College before moving to Bend, Ore. in 1997. Karen was a registered nurse, working at Providence Hospital in Medford for many years. She was also an avid hunter, serving on the state board of Oregon Hunter's Association and actively participating in fundraising and wildlife projects. She also enjoyed fishing, rock hunting, river rafting, and traveling, as well as entertaining family and friends. She traveled to Madagascar several times and founded the nonprofit Organization Madagascar Onboard aimed at providing educational opportunities for rural children in Madagascar. Karen was an exceptionally generous and caring person and will be missed in many ways by a multitude of people. Karen is survived by her husband, Kelly Smith; her son, Sean O'Neil, both of Bend, Ore; her parents, Don Sheffield of Talent, Ore. and Shirley Culver of Medford, Ore.; her sister, Kathy Moore (Buddy); niece, Katy Rains (Casey), both of Summerdale, Ala., and numerous nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Sheffield. No services are planned, per her wishes.
