HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS Nine Pear Blossom princesses set for pageant Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Nine Jackson County high school senior girls will vie for the title of 2016 Pear Blossom Queen at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the North Medford High School Auditorium. Contestants are Melina Lariz, Crater High School; Grayce Gaylor, Logos Public Charter School; Maddie Landis, Phoenix High School; Della Birdsall, Rogue River High School; Emily Riehlman, St. Mary’s School; Myra Rademacher, Eagle Point High School; Jaci Brumble, North Medford; Ashli Rigel, Prospect Charter School; and Hanna Anderson, South Medford High School. The girls will be judged on school leadership skills, academic achievement, community involvement, an interview with the judges, writing and presenting an essay, and answering impromptu questions on stage. Applicants are sought by having school activities directors hand out applications to interested senior girls at Rogue Valley high schools. The Senior Royalty Committee chose the top five from each school, and then each school selected its princess. More than 50 applications are received each year from area schools. Each princess earns a $500 college scholarship. The queen will reign over the Pear Blossom Parade on April 9, and will receive a $2,000 college scholarship sponsored by Kogap Enterprises. Doors to the March 26 pageant open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students, and free for children younger than 6. Over the past 25 years, the Pear Blossom Festival Association has given out more than $100,000 in scholarships to more than 150 girls. The pageant was created in 1991 by Darcey Mann-Self, Val James and the late Patti Bills, and was created to add a new dimension to the Pear Blossom Festival. Entertainment includes the Dance Arts Center, and winners of the USA Dance Young Ballroom Dance Competition held in February. The Pear Blossom Junior Royalty Court, to be selected earlier that day, will present bouquets donated by Corinne’s Flowers to the princesses.
