Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 27, 2005 Police recover motherboards Two men arrested in the theft of $125,000 worth of computer equipment from a Medford company By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune Two men face felony charges in connection with the theft of more than $125,000 in computer equipment stolen late Friday from a vehicle parked outside a northwest Medford business. Daniel Rivera Jr., 24, and Vito D. Chiarappa, 29, were arraigned Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of unlawful entry into a vehicle and aggravated first-degree theft. They were arrested Friday night at a Medford motel room, where officers recovered most of the property stolen from Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions in the 1200 block of Disk Drive, police said. Just before 10 p.m. Friday, an employee of the business phoned police to report someone had stolen 57 computer "motherboards" and other equipment from her unlocked car, said Medford police Lt. Tim George. Each motherboard is valued at $2,000. A motherboard is the primary processing component in a computer. "The amazing thing about it is the price of these items," George said. "It’s very high-dollar stuff that doesn’t take up a whole lot of space in a vehicle." Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions produces contamination monitoring systems often used in high-tech clean rooms and laboratories. Advertisement George said the Lighthouse employee had placed the valuable equipment in her car because she planned to transport the items to the company’s headquarters in San Jose, Calif. While police went to the business to investigate the theft, two Medford patrol officers pulled over a vehicle near the downtown area. During the stop, the vehicle’s female driver asked the officers to follow her to a South Central Avenue motel to help her retrieve possessions left in a room there, George said. When they arrived, the officers noticed a large amount of computer equipment in the room. George said detectives later obtained a search warrant for the room and a vehicle, and were able to locate a majority of the items stolen from Lighthouse. Rivera and Chiarappa were arrested at the motel and taken to the Jackson County Jail. Both remained in jail Monday. Rivera, of the 100 block of North Columbus Avenue in Medford, was being held on $25,000 bail. Chiarappa, a resident of the first block of North Main Street in Ashland, was being held on $20,000 bail, court records show. Two other people arrested at the motel remain jailed without bail. Michael James Kinler, 27, of Medford, was taken into custody on a probation violation, while Rachel Ann Saylor, 28, of Medford, was arrested on a parole violation. Neither are believed to have been involved in the theft of computer equipment, police said.
