Janel Marie Honea was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8:15 a.m. crash, according to an Oregon State Police news release. Police say Nicholas Tyler Daniels, 20, was headed east on the highway near milepost 57 when he lost control of a 1998 Ford Explorer, causing it to slide off the road and strike a large tree. Daniels and passenger Allison Falske, 19, both of Grants Pass, were flown by a Mercy Flights helicopter to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford following the wreck. Daniels was listed in good condition at the hospital late Thursday, while Falske was in serious condition, a nursing supervisor said. All three occupants of the SUV were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said. OSP detectives are continuing their investigation into the wreck, believing alcohol may have been involved, the news release said. Advertisement As of press time Friday, 44 people had been killed in traffic accidents in Jackson County during 2004, the highest total in at least 16 years. Jackson County Fire District No. 4 Capt. Rick Mendenhall said Highway 62 was covered in snow when the crash occurred just south of Farewell Bend, near Union Creek. "It was packed with snow from Prospect the rest of the way up," said Mendenhall. Snow was reported Friday along Highway 62 as low as near Shady Cove, said Ryan Sandler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Medford. According to OSP, several other highways in Southern Oregon on Friday were icy and snow-packed. The Oregon Department of Transportation issued a warning to motorists to be cautious while traveling along Highway 238 between Applegate and Jacksonville, where snow flurries and spots of ice were reported. And things could be getting worse over the next two days, forecasters say. "The snow level is going down (today) and (tonight)," Sandler said. "A good amount of rain and snow is coming in, and there could be travel problems." Snow levels across Southern Oregon are expected to fall from near 2,500 feet this morning to about 1,500 feet on Sunday. The Rogue Valley could receive a dusting of snow on Sunday, Sandler said. Morning lows in the valley are expected to remain below freezing through the first part of next week, as the current weather front passes through.
