UP NEXT: Saturday, 6A playoffs second round, David Douglas at Jesuit. » Social News The eighth-ranked North Medford boys couldn't buy a bucket on Wednesday, and the cold shooting cost them. David Douglas, seeded 24th out of 32 state playoff qualifers, upset the ninth-seeded Black Tornado, 52-47, during the first round of the Class 6A state basketball playoffs at North Medford High. The numbers weren't pretty for the home team: 15-for-46 from the field (including 7 of 30 in the second half) and 2 of 20 from beyond the 3-point arc. And yet despite all that, North Medford still led 23-21 at halftime, entered the fourth quarter tied at 36 and drew within three points on a Tucker Barry triple with 51.3 seconds to go. "I thought our defense was pretty sound for the most part," North Medford head coach Scott Plankenhorn said. "We just had a couple breakdowns and of course (David Douglas) was spreading the floor and trying to break us down. We did a good job of securing the lead, but 7 of 30 in the second half? It is hard to beat somebody when you aren't scoring the basketball. You can guard all you want and do all those things on that end but if you don't score the basketball you don't win." After Barry's 3, the Scots went 2 of 5 from the free-throw line and the Tornado missed its last three field-goal attempts. Leading the charge for David Douglas was the state's leading scorer, Charles Jones. The 6-foot-2 senior guard finished with 25 points, including 13 of his team's 16 points in the final frame. Jones has averaged 26.8 points this winter. Meanwhile, North senior Brian Schireman, the Southwest Conference player of year, finished 0 of 10 for zero points with Jones spearheading the defense on him. "Charles and (Jonathan Morris) both, I think (North) had a hard time staying in front of them, which opened up some other things," David Douglas head coach Chad Reeves said. "I think Charles' defense goes under the radar. I thought he did a good job of staying with (Schireman) and making life difficult. We've seen (Schireman) have some big games and we know he's a great scorer. (Jones) has a way of guarding the best player, because I've seen those open 3s for North go in on tape over and over again." Barry finished with 13 points, Tyren Wolfe nine points, four rebounds and four steals and Brad Allen eight points and 10 rebounds for the Tornado, which helped its cause by going 15 of 21 from the free-throw line. Kaison Faust chipped in seven points and Schireman added four assists and four steals. "To tell yourself your leader scorer gets zero, you're gonna have to have a whole bunch of other guys step up," Plankenhorn said. “We just didn’t shoot a good percentage.” North led 10-9 after the first quarter and took a 17-12 edge on an Allen free throw early in the second before the Scots pulled back in it. The Tornado was just 3 of 15 from the floor in the third and knocked down four more buckets in the fourth. Jones scored David Douglas' first 11 points during the final eight minutes. "They were knocking down their shots, and we didn't make ours," Wolfe said. "It's tough for the seniors. We didn't want to go out this way." Morris added 12 points for the Scots (13-12), who will next face ninth-ranked Jesuit in the second round on Saturday. David Douglas was the fourth-place team out of the Mt. Hood Conference. "It feels great," Reeves said. "To come away with a win, we couldn't be more excited." North finished 19-6 overall. The Tornado earned third place in the SWC with a 10-4 mark. "I think it was a really successful year," Wolfe said. "Obviously we didn't make it as far as we wanted to."
