I heard some talk it was going to freeze this week, but it hasn't happened. When do we usually get our first freeze and can we expect one soon? — Patti R., Medford Patti, if you were trying to coax a few more days out of your days out of your tomato plants, take heart. You've got another week before the National Weather Service anticipates freezing temperatures around Medford. As of Tuesday, Bear Creek drainage was looking at its eighth-longest growing season — the time between the final spring frost and the first freeze of the fall. That's coming on the heels of the longest growing season, which spanned 232 days between March 23 and Nov. 11 in 2014. With the predicted freeze early this week not coming to pass, the growing season was at 207 days and counting on Tuesday. The last spring freeze was April 2. Since the weather service began tracking such things a century or so ago, the average growing season — from the time when the minimum temperature last dips to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below to the first freeze — is April 28 to Oct. 18. The earliest freeze on record was Sept. 13, 1921 with the latest freeze coming on Nov. 29, 1937. "There were a lot of record highs in the late 1930s," said Brian Nieuwenhuis, a meteorologist with the weather service. Nieuwenhuis tells us that unexpected cloud cover fended off the expected cold air on Monday night. "We've got some cold air coming this weekend," he said.
