Six years later, the Medford-based financial institution is in growth mode on most fronts. Rogue Credit Union will symbolically break ground Wednesday morning as it embarks on half-million-dollar remodel of the former Scottish Rite temple on the southeast corner of Barnett Road and North Phoenix Road. The 1,500-square-foot branch office will be the 15th in Rogue's aggregation stretching from the South Coast to the Klamath Basin. Rogue is now 90,000-plus members strong, with $1 billion in assets and a loan portfolio of more than $788 million. Still, there has been a lot of hurry-up and wait as the credit union bided its time while Medford's Southeast Plan received its latest round of approvals. "Now that we've finally got approved by the City Council and Planning Commission," President and CEO Gene Pelham said, "it's full-steam ahead. We knew it was going to be a long-term process. Good planning requires consideration of all parties involved, and we wanted to be a good citizen. That doesn't mean we didn't want to be a good citizen five years earlier." Oregon Architecture of Medford produced the remodel design, conforming the structure at 955 North Phoenix Road to other Rogue buildings. The ground-breaking event begins at 10:30 a.m. Pelham said the location should become one of the busiest in Rogue's system soon after it opens late this year. "Our members have been requesting an east Medford location for years," Pelham said. "They were disappointed." The new office will require four or five new hires, Pelham said. Lisa Dobson, presently the manager of the North Medford office, will oversee day-to-day operations. It is the third full-service office in Medford, along with a downtown drive-up window on Front Street. On another front, Rogue plans to occupy its new 34,000-square-foot administrative offices on South Pacific Highway next weekend. "We're still missing some glass for some of the windows," Pelham said. "There was a little fire in the glass factory, and when that happens it slows up everything." Reach reporter Greg Stiles at 541-776-4463 or [email protected] .
