Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 30, 2005 Crews regain control of fire near Ashland The burn-barrel sparked grass fire near Old Siskiyou Highway south of Ashland flared up Wednesday night, consuming another five acres before it was lined late Thursday morning. The blaze, which began along the Steinman Loop on Highway 273, was believed to be contained late Wednesday. But at some point that night, it burned across a containment line and spread to the back side of a steep hill, away from homes along Conifer Way, Jackson County Fire District 5 Capt. Larry Decker said. The total area burned is estimated at 10 acres. No homes have been threatened. "Sometime early that night something rolled out of the middle of it and started a spot fire," Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Brian Ballou said. "We’re now doing mop up," Decker said. District 5 dispatched one engine to the area Thursday to aid ODF and U.S. Forest Service crews. The blaze again launched a large column of smoke above the area Thursday afternoon, prompting residents in the area to contact District 5.
