Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News July 4, 1915 (Note: As there was no July 4 edition, the following was drawn from July 3, 1915) MEDFORD HOLDS SANE AND SAFE 4TH CELEBRATION Medford is celebrating the Fourth of July today in a patriotic manner without any feathers or frills. About 1,500 visitors are in the city from Jackson county points. Scores of home people left this morning to spend the next two days in the hills, away from the heat of the city. The celebration is sane, without any firecrackers or noise-making devices. Warnings were given by the police to several who were prepared for shooting off tabooed contraptions. A large crowd attended the ball game, including a delegation of rooters from Grants Pass. Many sought the city park for rest and to escape the heat. At noon the mercury registered 97 degrees, slightly cooler than the past two previous days. The band gave concerts morning and afternoon at the park. This afternoon a race program is being given at the fair grounds, with a good crowd in attendance. A program of sports is being held on the railroad right of way. Tomorrow practically the entire basebal contingent will leave on a special train for Yreka. The P. & E. will run an excursion to Butte Falls tomorrow. All the stores of the city are keeping open today, closing Monday. GOLD HILL FIRE CAUSES DEATH OF PHONE MANAGER R.T. Gaine, manager of the home telephone company at Gold Hill, was stricken with heart failure during the progress of a fire in that city Friday afternoon, that caused $2,000 damage to the undertaking parlors of A.E. Kellogg, former county coroners. Gaine was carrying effects from the phone office which adjoins the undertaking establishment, when he was stricken. He was dead before medical assistance arrived. Caskets and other undertaking paraphernalia was destroyed in the blaze. Spontaneous combustion of chemicals in the embalming room is given as the cause of the fire. The loss is partially covered by insurance. It was first reported in this city that the entire district east of the river was afire. Yesterday's blaze was the second heavy fire in Gold Hill in six weeks. Gaine leaves a wife and two children, and was 30 years old.
