Sure, I just turned 44. In 20 more years, it won’t be future tense when I sing the Beatles’ “When I’m Sixty-Four.” Twenty years in this business and innumerable gallons of Diet Coke have put a lot of miles on me. Every one of the white hairs on my head and face has a story. We just finished the busiest portion of the fall season, which at this publication means about 24 extra pages a week to fill with local football, volleyball, golf, tennis and cross-country action. I love to help with sports coverage. Watching kids improve and learn to win is a great part of this job – even if it means working 20-hour days every Friday for almost three months. It is a lot of work, but worth every minute, both for the quality of the newspaper and the genuine enjoyment I get from doing it. Last week, it meant doing that two nights in a row with Thursday and Friday football games. I got it done. At about midnight Friday, with my sports editor already in bed getting ready to leave for his honeymoon and our sports writer finished for the night and getting ready to head to another event Saturday afternoon, I was getting really tired. I don’t think 24-year-old Kent would have been impressed with the old man hoping all of the headlines in Saturday’s sports section were at least in English. I had a front-row seat on the struggle bus all the way to deadline in the early hours of Saturday morning. But I made it. That’s all that counts. I bet 24-year-old Kent would also get a kick out of how tired this old man was all weekend after banging out 40 hours in two days. Getting old is tough. There are a lot of things I like about being older and smarter. But I have to admit, I miss some things about being 24. Twenty years ago, if I were asked what the worst injury was I had ever incurred while getting dressed, I would have laughed. Now I actually have to think about it to get an accurate ranking of the top five. Don’t even get me started about the number of times I wake up injured because I slept wrong. But I’m not worried about being 44. I’m still young in my mind, even if the joints creak and my back aches more than it used to. As George Burns said, “You can't help getting older, but you don’t have to get old.” You won’t catch me getting old.
