COLLEGE FOOTBALL Oregon receiver to transfer Redshirt sophomore Allen did not have catch in 2014 Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 18, 2015 @ 5:34 pm By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 18, 2015 @ 5:34 pm » Social News EUGENE — Chance Allen, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver who did not have a reception during the 2014 season, is leaving Oregon. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Allen, who is from Missouri City, Texas, said he plans to transfer to the University of Houston. Tom Herman, Ohio State’s offensive coordinator during the Buckeyes’ 42-20 victory over the Ducks in the national championship, is the new Houston coach. After the loss of Josh Huff and De’Anthony Thomas to the NFL and a spring knee injury to Bralon Addison, wide receiver was an area of concern for Oregon entering the 2014 season. Moving Byron Marshall from running back to receiver, coupled with the emergence of Devon Allen, Dwayne Stanford and Darren Carrington, resulted in one of the deepest and most talented units the Ducks have had in recent memory. Last week offensive coordinator Scott Frost gave wide receivers coach Matt Lubick credit for developing the young corps that helped Marcus Mariota win the Heisman Trophy. “Matt Lubick is a fine coach. He’s very detailed, very organized, the kids play hard for him. He has done an unbelievable job with the group he’s had,” Frost said. “Receiver was a question mark coming into the season. We’ve not only played well there, but we’ve been as deep as we’ve been in a long time. For the freshmen especially to be able to play as quick as they have is a testament to his coaching ability.” Marshall said he planned to request an evaluation from the NFL, but the junior did not join Mariota and defensive end Arik Armstead in declaring early for the draft. He led the Ducks with 74 receptions for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns, becoming the only Oregon player to have a 1,000-yard rushing season and a 1,000-yard receiving season. Devon Allen helped the Ducks win the Pac-12 championship with 684 yards and seven touchdowns. The NCAA and USATF 110-meter hurdles champion suffered an injury returning the opening kickoff at the Rose Bowl and was unable to play in the national championship. Stanford had 43 receptions for 639 yards and six touchdowns, and Carrington added 37 receptions for 704 yards and four touchdowns. Carrington was suspended for the national championship game by the NCAA after failing a drug test. He is facing a half-season suspension in 2015. True freshman Charles Nelson, after establishing himself as a special teams standout, added 16 receptions for 158 yards and a touchdown. “All those guys have made a lot of plays, and we’re excited about them,” Lubick said. “It’s the most depth we’ve had in a long time at the receiver position at the University of Oregon.” The coaching staff is also excited about Jalen Brown, who redshirted this season, and 2015 recruit Alex Ofodile. Oregon loses senior starter Keanon Lowe, who caught a touchdown pass to cap Oregon’s first drive against Ohio State, and senior backup/punt returner Johnathan Loyd. Other receivers on the roster include: Jeff Bieber, Austin Daich, B.J. Kelley, Chayce Maday, Zac Schuller and Chris Tewhill.
