On the first depth chart released Monday, three running backs — junior Byron Marshall, sophomore Thomas Tyner and true freshman Royce Freeman — are listed as potential starters for Saturday’s 2014 opener against South Dakota (7:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks). “Each of them is preparing as if they’re the starter,” said quarterback Marcus Mariota, who will be backed up by Jeff Lockie this season. “Whoever it may be, we have all the confidence in them.” Marshall is the Pac-12’s most productive returning running back after emerging as the starter over De’Anthony Thomas last season and rushing for 1,038 yards and 14 touchdowns in 12 games. Tyner was third on the team, just behind Mariota (715 yards, nine touchdowns), with 711 yards and nine touchdowns as a true freshman. Coaches have been bragging about Freeman, who is listed at 5-foot-11, 229 pounds, throughout fall camp. “I’ve got it as a three-way tie right now. It’s an or, or, or,” said longtime running backs coach Gary Campbell, who has compared Freeman to former Oregon standout and current Carolina Panther Jonathan Stewart. “So we’ll see as this week goes on.” Campbell isn’t concerned with egos ruining the chemistry behind Mariota. “They’ve handled it well, they’re all team players,” Campbell said. “We make evaluations, but I think they can see what’s going on on the field, and they know who’s making progress and who’s not.” Senior wide receiver Keanon Lowe retained his starting spot, and NCAA 110-meter hurdles champion Devon Allen, a redshirt freshman, will begin his collegiate football career on the field as the Ducks look to replace Josh Huff and Bralon Addison. “Devon did everything right. Obviously, he’s a world class athlete and he’s got a world class work ethic,” offensive coordinator Scott Frost said. “He’s really smart, he’s tough and he does all the right things. … We’re excited to see what he can do.” Dwayne Stanford, a 6-5 sophomore who redshirted last season because of a knee injury, and redshirt freshman Darren Carrington appear to still be competing at the third wide receiver position. “It’s tough to decide because they both deserve to play,” Frost said. “Darren is extremely talented, he’s come a long way from his freshman year. We’re anxious to see him on the field. Dwayne is really consistent, making a lot of catches, got a big body. We’re going to play a bunch of receivers because we run so much and play so much.” True freshman Charles Nelson is currently Lowe’s backup, and sophomore Chance Allen is No. 2 behind Devon Allen. Frost said he would also be comfortable putting former Duck basketball star Jonathan Loyd on the field. With Tyler Johnstone out for the season with a torn ACL, 6-6, 300-pound senior Jake Fisher has been moved from starting right tackle to left tackle. Andre Yruretagoyena will be the starting right tackle. Flanking all-American center Hroniss Grasu are left guard Hamani Stevens with Jake Pisarcik or Cameron Hunt at right guard. “I’m confident in whoever they put out there,” senior outside linebacker Tony Washington said of the offensive tackles. “I know these guys have been working hard. I’ve seen them always working in the weight room, I’ve seen them out doing extra work with coach (Joe) Bernardi and coach (Steve) Greatwood, and I think they’re going to be pretty good.” Running back isn’t the only three-headed monster for Oregon. Tight ends Pharaoh Brown, Johnny Mundt and Evan Baylis are still battling to start and expected to play prominent roles this season. First-year defensive coordinator Don Pellum’s projected starters in the front seven are Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner at defensive end, Alex Balducci at nose guard, Washington and Tyson Coleman at outside linebacker and Derrick Malone and Rodney Hardrick at inside linebacker. In the secondary, where the Ducks return a lot of experience but only one starter from 2013, cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is joined by senior safety Erick Dargan and senior cornerback Troy Hill. Redshirt freshman Tyree Robinson and Reggie Daniels are still competing for the other starting safety spot. Dior Mathis is listed as Hill’s backup, but the senior will be on the field frequently in the pass-happy Pac-12. “Everything we’re doing out on the practice field and the competition is good for us,” Tyner said. “It will eventually make the team better.” Other true freshmen joining Freeman and Nelson on the two deep are long snapper Tanner Carew, backup right tackle Tyrell Crosby and second-string placekicker Aidan Schneider. Matt Wogan is the No. 1 placekicker and Ian Wheeler is the No. 1 punter. Sure-handed veterans Lowe (kickoff), Tyner (kickoff) and Ekpre-Olomu (punt) are atop the depth chart in the return game.
