Jeffery Michael Forgey, 33, died after suffering massive head trauma in the 4:50 a.m. single-vehicle accident, said Oregon State Police Trooper Greg Costanzo. Austin Robert Ridge, 21, was air- lifted to Providence Hospital in Medford, where he remained in critical condition with head injuries late Sunday. Fundamental questions remained about the accident, including who was driving the 1988 Toyota 4-Runner registered to Forgey, Costanzo said. Preliminary investigation indicated that Forgery likely was the driver. The men were traveling east on Highway 62 when the SUV failed to negotiate a turn and rolled several times, landing about 425 feet from the highway. Both men were thrown about 40 feet, said Costanzo, indicating that it’s unlikely that seatbelts were in use. Neither speed nor alcohol or drug use appeared to be a factor in the accident, the trooper said. "It looks like they just drove off the road or fell asleep," he said. No charges were likely to be filed in connection with the accident, officials said. Costanzo said the crash was first reported by one of several early morning anglers.
