Mendonca aids U.S. with four medals Tony Mendonca of Grants Pass played a big role in helping the United States bring home a total of 20 golds, seven silvers and five bronze medals from the World Karate Championships May 5-7. The competition was held in Italy. Mendonca, who trains at Del Saito's Martial Arts Training Center and Medford's USA Karate Training Center, won two gold and two silver medals. He won a gold medal in Kobudo Short Weapon and Traditional Team Kumite, and earned silver in Traditional Kumite Sparring and Kobudo Long Weapon. Mendonca was part of an eight-member team, with other members hailing from Hawaii, California, Indiana and Ohio.
