The Elected Officials Compensation Committee, a required board under state law, also suggested raises ranging from 2 to 6 percent for three officials, in order to keep their salaries similar to others in comparable counties. The suggestions have gone to the county Budget Committee for consideration. The 5 percent increases for re-election would go to Assessor Connie Roach (current salary $71,902) and Commissioner Simon Hare (current salary $75,391), each of whom has been re-elected once. The raises to maintain approximate parity would go to: • Roach, 3 percent increase. • Legal Counsel Wally Hicks, 2 percent (current salary $94,284). • Sheriff Dave Daniel, 6 percent (current salary $84,360). All three are elected positions. Since the mid-1990s, Josephine County is the only county in Oregon where the position of legal counsel is an elected position. Those raises would increase salaries so pay would be about 5 percent less than the average pay of officials in Oregon counties of similar size. Those counties are Coos, Douglas, Klamath, Benton, Linn, Polk, Umatilla, Yamhill and Lincoln. All but one of Josephine County's elected officials earn less than the average pay of the like-sized counties. The pay for Josephine County's district attorney, a position held by Ryan Mulkins, is 3 percent above the average. Neighboring Jackson County is not considered a comparable county. Officials there make, on average, about 25 percent more than their counterparts in Josephine County. Compensation Committee Chairman Larry West said in a letter to the Budget Committee that parity raises help attract qualified persons, while the bump for re-election rewards longevity and experience. "Josephine County expects its elected officials to serve its residents well, often with additional workloads, the personal expense of managing individual election campaigns, dealing with turnover that impacts workloads and etc.," West wrote. "Our recognition recognizes the hard work that is done by the individuals and provides a systematic way to reach comparability with others doing the same work." The Budget Committee is tentatively scheduled to discuss the recommendations May 3. The meeting gets underway at 4 p.m. at the Anne Basker Auditorium, 600 N.W. Sixth St., in downtown Grants Pass.
