Morning or afternoon walks keep me connected to it. I have a two-fold renovation proposal, springing from my habit of picking up trash along the way, and from discovering another business closed in the Grandview Shopping Center. First, Black Tornado: Can you apply some peer pressure to get your student body and everyone else to pick up after themselves when visiting the Grandview Shopping Center and vicinity? No, I’m not blaming students. I’m just asking them to be the catalyst for cleanup. Only then can the second step occur: Entice a developer to improve the Grandview Shopping Center to bring quality tenants and foot traffic. Hoping for a neighborhood free of candy wrappers, fast food bags and drink cups. Jacqueline Greer, Medford   Global freezing There were 90 inches of snow in Buffalo, N.Y., on Nov. 18, 2014. Freezing temperatures in all 50 states for nine days before Thanksgiving, and 240 million Americans locked in a prolonged deep freeze. A sudden foot of snow on the Texas panhandle on Jan. 22 caused 7,000 flights to be cancelled, and thousands delayed. Amtrak was shut down from Philadelphia to New York. There were 3 feet of snow in a winter hurricane on Jan. 26. There's enough snow in Boston to fill Gillette Stadium 90 times, with more to come! Yep, no doubt about it, global warming is out to get us. Ron Smith, Medford Media exploits differences   Every article I read about our new governor includes this description of very personal and intimate preferences, "openly bisexual." This is not an item for public disclosure, and reading it repeatedly in the Mail Tribune as well as other media makes me furiously angry. If the next governor were a man, would the media describe him as heterosexual if he were not bisexual? Just another example of media exploiting and grasping any kind of personal information to amuse the public. Beatrice Bridges, Grants Pass Race to judgment Governor Kitzhaber lamented in his resignation message that, although no guilt has been proven through legal investigation, he had been tried in the press. A perfect example is the Mail Tribune’s headline from Feb. 16, “Probe to focus on financial crimes.” The headline should have read “Probe to focus on financial dealings” — or words to that effect — in order to be unbiased. Connie Saldana, Ashland Inflammatory details I just finished reading Kathleen Parker’s column about "juicing the story," the one about the news coverage of the three people shot at UNC. As with so many of her columns, I find myself agreeing with almost everything she says. She is such a refreshing breath of wisdom in the world of media. One statement in the above mentioned column bears comment, “Professional journalism standards have long discouraged mention of potentially inflammatory details … .” If that is truly the case, then it seems to me there are very few in the field of journalism who are following that standard anymore. It seems to be the other way around. My guess is that it’s the "inflammatory details" that sell and drive up the ratings. Unfortunate, but probably true. I am thankful to Ms. Parker for pointing out the truly unnecessary headlining of the fact these three people were Muslims. It’s a point so well taken, that I hope those in her industry take notice.
