These trees would have ended up in our landfill or burned. Instead, they were recycled into chips by the Ashland Parks Department to be used on the trails in our parks. Thanks go to the Ashland Parks Department, Ashland Lions Club, All-In-One Rental, and families from Pack 112 and Troop 112. The generous donations by the citizens of Ashland to Troop 112 for this service will help to fund this year's summer camp and future high-adventure treks. The representatives from DEQ and the Corps of Engineers were all committed public servants and well versed in Thursday night's subject. The DEQ moderator laid down some simple rules for the meeting. He asked for questions about the 401 permitting process. Instead, he got speeches and statements, many of which were so convoluted that I could not really understand them. I applaud Chris Stine of DEQ for helping several speakers form a question out of their gibberish. And of course the early speaker who berated the panel was a crackpot and way out of line. I commend the cool displayed by the moderator. Yet all in all I was extremely disappointed by the LNG foes. Sadly, I learned almost nothing from the Q&A. Jim Britton, Jacksonville Get involved We aren't the only ones trying to stop a pipeline. Kinder Morgan and the Tennessee Pipeline are trying to move natural gas from Pennsylvania through the southern part of New Hampshire to Massachusetts, where it will be exported to Canada. It requires an "incineration zone" or blast area of 1,000 feet on each side, and compressor stations every 12 to 20 miles which create extreme noise and light pollution 24/7. Does this sound familiar? How about another familiar name — Kinder (of Kinder and Morgan) is Richard Kinder, who is the former chairman and CEO of Enron. Sort of makes you wonder who is behind the Canadian group that wants to spoil our state. We should not let greed on their part and ours be the deciding factor that allows a project that, once started, will be here forever. It is time to get involved and not allow something so detrimental to our beautiful state.
